Romeo used three silenced shots to destroy the heavy lock on a side door of the house that was off a patio area. He opened the door to find a short staircase. At the top of those stairs was another door; it was locked. Instead of shooting it, Romeo rammed a shoulder against it. The lock gave way with the sound of wood splintering and he stepped into a living room.
“Is someone there?” called a voice from the rear of the house.
Romeo headed toward it by walking down a hallway with a white marble floor. He found Gavin Monk standing alone at the end of a corridor; there was a gun in his hand. Romeo already had his weapon raised; he fired four shots at Monk. The slugs impacted with a pane of clear ballistic glass and were redirected into the walls. The points on the glass where his rounds struck had spiderweb cracks as individual sheets of the layered material were damaged.
Monk grinned. “You’re the first one to make it inside the house.” As he spoke, he hit a button on a panel that was on the wall beside him.
Romeo heard a whirling noise and spun around. A second sheet of ballistic glass slid out of a wall and blocked his retreat. There were no doors along the twenty-foot length of hallway he was in and he had no tools that could be used to make it through the walls, ceiling, or floor.
Romeo attempted to slide the glass back into the wall and found that it was impossible. He turned around to look at Monk.
“You intended to trap me?”
“That’s right.”
“Why?”
Monk’s phone went off. It was John. He answered it, listened, then spoke.
“I have him, John. He’s trapped between the glass walls.”
More listening.
“Yeah he’s in the house. The sneaky bastard pole vaulted over the wall. What’s been happening outside?”
Monk listened as John told him about how Romeo rigged the tree branches with string. It made him laugh.
“I hear the ATV coming back. I’ll see you soon.”
Romeo was staring at Monk with his head cocked to the side.
“What’s going on, dude?”
“I lured you here to see what I could learn from you. You’re the best assassin yet. If we didn’t have traps set up in the house, I’d be dead right now.”
“You’ve done this before?”
“Oh yeah, and you all ask that question.”
“How many times have you done this?”
“You’re number eight. After you, I’m going to lure Tanner here. And thanks to you, we know ways to strengthen our defenses. I guess we have to do something about that wall for one thing.” Monk shook his head. “Pole vaulting. Yeah, we never thought of that.”
John entered from the front of the house and appeared behind Romeo holding a gun. He stared at him through the glass wall.
“He’s older than I’d thought he’d be.”
“Why?” Monk asked. “You know that he’s been active for decades.”
John shrugged. “Maybe it’s the long hair?”
Romeo stepped away from the glass wall at his back, took aim at John, and fired.
